Episode 2: Eva Gore Booth

Listen Later

"Queer theory before queer theory was invented." Join hosts Alana Daly Mulligan and Niamh Browne as they delve into the life of the well-respected writer and poet Eva Gore-Booth with Dr. Mary McAuliffe. A passionate pacifist, Eva was deeply involved in Irish nationalism, women’s rights, trade union equality, and animal rights. We explore her romantic partnership with fellow activist Ester Roper, who together, created a home that became a centre for the republican movement in the UK. They also bravely engaged with controversial topics of their time, including same-sex relationships and transgenderism 🌈✨. This episode features recordings from Kilmainham Jail, where Eva's sister, Countess Constance Markievicz, was held during the 1916 Rising, and where Eva and Ester campaigned together for her freedom. Our hosts also read and reflect on Yeats' poem "In Memory of Eva Gore-Booth and Con Markievicz." Celebrate their profound impact on social justice. Click the link in the bio.
