Episode 2: Period Poverty with The Power Pump Girls

Listen Later

Episode Guests: Sherin Dawud and Raina Vallot of Power Pump Girls, Inc.

"power pump girls, inc. is a social impact club whose mission is to empower women to connect and serve"

These two powerhouses work to bring women together to impact culture and legislation. They were instrumental in changing the law around the Tampon Tax in Louisiana and are currently advocating for period equity in their community.

The Buzz Words:

Pink Tax - a term coined around the mid 90s which referred to the price inflation of "substantially similar" products based on them being marketed to women. Think razors, shampoo, deodorant.

Tampon Tax - It's not a specific tax on menstrual products. We use this term when discussing menstrual products being taxed as value added or luxury item.

Period Poverty - When a woman has financial trouble accessing her menstrual products.

In case you are under the impression that Period Poverty only happens in developing countries: In 2021, the George Mason University completed a study which showed 14% of college females experienced period poverty in the last year and 10% experience period poverty every month. This means missed classes, missed work, and missed opportunities. When women's purchasing power is already less than our male counterparts; this is unacceptable.
