Bite-Sized History

Episode 2. The First World War: A German Perspective from Ernst Jünger

Listen Later

Today we examine "Storm of Steel", one of the most famous memoirs of the First World War. It was written by a frontline stormtrooper officer named Ernst Jünger. He was highly decorated and was wounded multiple times. In Storm of Steel he outlines daily life in the trenches but also offers opinions on topics like morale, honour, tactics, and camaraderie. It was written in 1920.

The version I used is the 1929 English translation of the 1920 German original. It was translated by Basil Creighton.
