Episode 2: Watch with us! Picture a Scientist

Listen Later

Hi everyone. It's been a while since episode 1, but episode 2 is finally here. In this episode we were watching the documentary "Picture a Scientist" a film by Sharon Shattuck and Ian Cheney. You can find more information on their official website here. The movie follows biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring through their stories of gender bias, discrimination and harassment. But it also shows how these women endured and overcame these difficult situations to become the amazing scientists they are today. Without Nancy Hopkins and her female warriors, us women in science wouldn't have the "liberties" we now have, (very) slowly closing the representation and pay gaps in academia. We are very thankful for their courage to step up and talk about these problems. This is the movie that inspired this podcast, so we highly recommend watching it.

P.S: We watched this movie laaaaate into the night, so if you think we sound tired, you are very correct :)

Keep your ears peeled for next Saturday, when we're releasing our first episode highlighting a female story in STEM. All next episodes will introduce you to brilliant women in science, who were either forgotten or ignored by academia, or who had to endure discrimination, while still doing amazing science. Thank you for listening!
