Ancient World

Episode 20 - Final part of Venus, and summary of Canto 1-9. Dante is passionate about Florence and the Church!

Listen Later

In the episode we are going through canto 9 in detail, where Dante is using the passionate atmosphere for his personal attacks on the Popes, the Vatican, and the contemporary rulers of Florence. We also meet Cunizza from a powerful Medieval family in North of Italy, and the poet Folquet of Marseillies who was devoted to a passionate and amorous life as younger, but then later became a religious figure and the Bishop of Toulouse.

Overall themes are the perils of too much intensity and passion, but also the redemption and salvation, and how the souls are full of joy with being in the Paradise with the right amount of blessing adjusted to their own capacities.

With this canto the book aslo ends the first main part where the "shadow of the earth" can still be seen, but already the lights are too strong to be recognized as people. All Dante can see is the light, and hear their joyful voices.

Enjoy!
