Jennifer interviews Paul—her ex-husband—and they talk through how they met as friends in an online workout community, stayed close for years, and eventually fell into a real relationship, blended their families, and got married (twice). They say their marriage had normal ups and downs and a strong friendship underneath it, which is why they’re still close now.
The big shift came when Paul came out as gay. He shares he’d buried it most of his life—especially in the military—and that healing (therapy, meds, getting out of a darker headspace) helped him finally be honest. Jennifer describes the whiplash: loving him, wanting to support him, and also grieving the life they’d planned.
They talk about how few resources exist for spouses in this situation, so they had to figure it out themselves—considering everything from staying together to separate living spaces—before deciding living apart made the most sense.
Even separated, they still show up for each other. The takeaway: keep listening, be honest, don’t force a script, and know this kind of ending doesn’t have to be ugly—you can still keep the best parts if you both choose to handle it with care.
