In The Little Mermaid (1989) and Spider-Man (2002) we find two women initially thought to be positive portrayals of strong female identity. Yet, looking back, both fail to meet even basic modern standards for gender equity and female independence. With more than a decade between the texts, how is it possible that Ariel and Mary Jane can't find their own voices?
