An early anthology film, the Ealing Studios movie Dead of Night (1945) gets a watching this week. While most of the entries in this movie are strong, “The Ventriloquists Dummy” is quite the unsettling chapter. The H.G. Wells story “The Story of the Inexperienced Ghost” is adapted here and is pretty much the comic relief which isn’t something you’d usually think about anything he wrote.
