Hearing loss is a subject very close to the hearts of Bryan and Daniel since both of them suffer from it. Listen in to their conversation on how they live and deal with permanent hearing damage. It is the 21st century affliction!

Noise measured in dB

  • The humming of a refrigerator ~ 45 decibels
  • Normal conversation ~ 60 to 75 decibels
  • Noise from heavy city traffic ~ 85 decibels
  • Motorcycles ~ 95 decibels
  • An MP3 player at maximum volume ~ 105 decibels
  • Sirens ~ 120 decibels
  • Firecrackers and firearms ~ 150 decibels

    • ### TYPES OF NOISE INDUCED HEARING LOSS (NIDCD)

    THRESHOLD SHIFT - The human ear defense mechanism, when presented with a loud sound source.

    Temporary Threshold Shift (TTS)

    • It may occur suddenly after exposure to a high level of noise, a situation in which most people experience reduced hearing. A temporary threshold shift results in temporary hearing loss.
    • Treatment - Spend some time in a quiet place and not expose yourself to loud sounds.
    • The recovery time for a temporary threshold shift varies.
    • It may take only a few hours for the symptoms to subside but it can also last for days.
    • If your hearing does not recover within a few days, you should seek medical advice.

      • Permanent Threshold Shift (PTS)

      • A permanent shift in the auditory threshold.
      • It may occur suddenly or develop gradually over time.
      • As the name suggest, permanent hearing loss.
      • Dependent on level, frequency and duration of the exposure (above 115dBspl)
      • Cell loss in the cochlear
      • Permanent damage, cells cannot regenerate.
      • Common cases, as you grow older you will not be able to hear certain frequencies, usually higher frequencies.

        • HEARING LOSS STATS

        • At least 10 million adults (6 percent) in the U.S. under age 70—and perhaps as many as 40 million adults (24 percent)—have features of their hearing test that suggest hearing loss in one or both ears from exposure to loud noise.

          • HOW TO PREVENT HEARING LOSS

          • Listen music at low to moderate volume shorter duration
          • Don’t slap/shout someone on the ear.
          • Always measure the your mixing level in the studio or live.
          • Cover your ears when something loud passes by (e.g. sirens, construction sites, car revs).
          • Use ear protection when in loud environments.
