After graduating from the US Air Force Academy, Burt Field qualified to fly F-16 fighter planes and then rose to instructor. His Air Force career led him to be named Commander of the US Forces in Japan and the 5th Air Force. Lt Gen Field also served as the Military Assistant to Ambassador Richard Holbrooke followed by serving as the Vice Director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
