There is no other day in the year better than 11 November to express your gratitude. 11 November is Armistice Day, or Poppy Day. As you may know the poppy became symbolic of the loss during WW1. They were immortalized in John McCrae's famous poem "In Flanders Fields".

After the war the poppy became the symbol of those who were lost in the war and the 11 November became the day of remembrance to express our gratitude to those who gave so much.
