It can be hard to keep the faith in a bigger plan when getting pregnant doesn’t come easily. On this episode of the podcast, I talk with Kathleen Scherek about how you can use spirituality to make meaning of your (in)fertility process. In particular, we discuss how to reconcile scientific and more spiritual approaches to life, how you can start connecting to your future child’s soul, how to keep practicing trust even when you’re stuck in the (in)fertility void, and how to cultivate your spiritual energy so you become more conscious of what you’re emitting and receiving. Kathleen also provides us with some of her most favourite - and scientifically validated - gratitude rituals.
Disclaimer: I talk on the show about a story I read about the birth song that mothers of the African Himba tribe give their children. Since recording this podcast episode, I’ve learned that this is actually a (racist) myth. Given that the story has really inspired me throughout my own fertility journey, I’ve decided not to cut it from the episode.
Top quotes:
Kathleen Scherek: “There are so many cultures on the planet where the minute they have a thought about having a child, that is their birthday. So when a child becomes a thought in our mind, they have begun their journey towards us. Whatever that might be. If we’re aware of it, we can be communicating, we can be talking, we can be emoting, we can be embracing during that entire time on an energetic level.”
Françoise Molenaar: “When you’re dealing with recurring loss, that first trimester, it can be horrible, it can be so scary. But then to also ask yourself the question ‘even if this pregnancy will end up in a loss, what is it that I can give this child now, today. Because today I’m pregnant, today I’m carrying this child.’”
Kathleen Scherek: “As humans, and especially as parents, oftentimes we have difficulty when we’re in a scenario that we cannot control. Living in that void is not a feeling of control. It’s almost like a trapeze artist going from one trapeze to the next. That’s the fertile void. Those who’re going through that process, to just be able to recognize that it’s ok to be there, it’s ok for things to not be controllable and to develop your own ability to sit with the unknown.”
