In 1909 the RMS Republic sank just off the coast of Nantucket Island. There was over $3,000,000 in gold in her hold. After the wreck, treasure hunters searched in vein, looking for this sunken treasure. Captain Martin Bayerle found the Republic sitting at 270 feet below the waves. The gold has yet to be recovered.
