A first-hand faith…
There are three distinct groups of people in this passage:
1. 12 disciples of John
1. 12 disciples of John: Are bapised in the Holy Spirit and immediately receive the gifts. There are different gifts, and there’s a need to recognise the gift given to each. It’s all about strengthening and benefitting the community. To desire the gifts of the spirit is to desire more of the Spirit himself!
2. 7 sons of Sceva (vs 13-17): Describes the failure of these 7 sons who weren’t acting under God’s authority. They were simply using the name of Jesus to try and achieve their own ends. It was a second hand belief . When we stray from a first hand relationship we don’t just break his law – we break His heart. He’s after intimate relationship!!
3. The sorcerers: They burned their scrolls which were worth a days wage each. They totally sold out to this new relationship. And the impact was that the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power! What does burning the scrolls look like for us today? Is there anything that used to be precious to you, but in turning away from it (burning it forever) would lead to eternal outcomes?
