Emperors came and went. Dynasties rose and dynasties fell. In nearly every case those dynasties were run by men who ruled over a vast Asian empire with hand-picked bureaucrats and concubines. And in the middle of China’s most beloved imperial dynasty, Wu Zetian defied all odds and became Empress.
