Show 232 – Recorded 9-30-23 – Today we are focused on the under-appreciated post WW II New York City blues scene. We recently spoke with Mr Larry Simon about his book that focuses on the music, the artists and the movers and shakers who helped create that New York City blues scene with a book titled “New York City Blues”. Larry’s good friend Mr John Broven Edited and contributed to the book and we provide excerpts from our conversations with each of these gentlemen. There are many interviews in the book and 26 recordings on the accompanying CD for us to enjoy. These great recordings were made from 1949 – 1994. Of the many blues legends featured in the book, our focus is on Mr Bob Gaddy, Mr Roscoe Gordon, Mr Bill Doggett and Mr Bill Butler, MsElla and Mr Buddy Johnson, Mr Larry Dale, Mr Wild Jimmy Spruill, Mr Tarheel Slim, Dr Horse, MrBrownie McGhee and his brother Sticks McGhee, and the Reverend Gary Davis. Additionally, Larry and John discuss historic New York City Producers, Record Label Owners and movers and shakers, Mr Bobby Robinson and Mr Hy Weiss. Please Join Us For This Podcast.
