In this episode, I share details on where someone can find the equation to determine if a pipe freeze is likely to occur. The ASHRAE Handbook of Fundamentals provides a short entry on this topic. Given the amount and type of insulation thickness, the pipe size, and ambient temperature, our engineers can put those factors into the equation and get the amount of hours until the pipe will freeze. This can be useful in determining the cause of the water loss property damage and can help determine if it is a defective installation during construction, a defect in the pipe or product or if the temperature change contributed to the loss.
