Ancient World

Episode 24 - Dante learns his Future, and how he's going to write the Comedy! Canto XVII.

Listen Later

In this canto Dante is finally asking the big question the is burning within him like a flame - about what his future holds. Cacciaguida can reveal that he will be thrown out of his beloved city, but the he will write a great work, that will be nutriment for centuries to come.

Dante accepts this, and it's important to note that he is writing this during his last years in Ravenna (c. 1316-1321), after over 15 years in exile. The time in the story however, is set to 1300.

Dante is also explaining why he is using so many famous and prominent people as examples in the book, and why he has to be honest and truthful, for the work to have a real and intended effect on the future.

This is the central canto in Paradise, and we're now half way through the book already!

Thanks for listening,
and enjoy!
