Season 1, Episode 26: Ilana Short
Dan Sterenchuk and Tommy Estlund are honored to have as our guest, Illana Short. Ilana lives a pretty typical life in Las Vegas, Nevada, with her husband Jeff, kids Reed and Juliet, and menagerie of pets including her dog, Peso, and cats Benjamin and Juniper. And, she is pretty happy with this typical life, considering it hasn’t always been that way. Ilana grew up with a mom who was single for much of the time, put herself through college, got married at 25, was widowed at 27, was re-married at 30, found out she was pregnant two weeks after her wedding, went to graduate school in her 30s, and had two back-to-back cross-country moves before ending up in Nevada.
Ilana discovered a passion for museums at the age of 16, when she was forced to volunteer for one. She has been lucky that she has been able to work in a field she loves, and is currently the Curator of Photography for the Nevada State Museum, Las Vegas. She also just began a new role as Communication and Outreach Manager, which means she gets paid to spend a lot of time on Facebook. She holds a BA in Anthropology from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and an MA in Museum Studies from Johns Hopkins University. In the little bit of spare time she has, Ilana loves listening to music, talking about museum related things, traveling (especially to museums and cemeteries), cooking Vegetarian food, baking, and forcing her kids to fall in love with the things that she likes to do.
