In 2019 Nic Spooner become a household name in South African Hockey. He scored the match-winning goal against the USA in the FIH Series Finals, a game that essentially qualified South Africa for the Tokyo Olympics. He did it with just 23 seconds left on the clock.

A few months later he bagged a hat-trick in the African Hockey Road to Tokyo final game against Egypt to cement that Olympic Spot.
