Nowadays, we talk awfully excitedly about our precise cultural moment, but hardly at all about how we got here. Most generations mythologize their contributions, and try their best to hide their faults. But I say we learn much more, show truer respect and also sometimes find surprisingly deep grounds for compassion, when we look past these myths and think about people and lives instead.
