The story centres around a piano that was in the living room of Charles Doker's modest Pittsburgh home in 1936. The piano belonged to Sutter, a Southerner who had owned the Charles family as slaves. When his brother was lynched for stealing Sutter's piano, Doker was travelling north to Pittsburgh. In order for Willie Boy to buy the land in the South where the family once lived, he wishes to sell the piano to him and his friend Lymon a few years later. Willie's sister Bernice, a recent widow, is against selling it.
