Listen Later

Bertha Benz, the wife and business partner of Carl Benz, played a pivotal role in the invention of the automobile and the success of the Benz Patent-Motorwagen, the world's first automobile.

Born in 1849 in Pforzheim, Germany, Bertha Benz defied the norms of her time by embracing her husband's passion for engineering and automobiles. Despite societal expectations, Bertha supported Carl's vision and became an integral part of his experiments and endeavors.

Bertha took an audacious 1888 road trip, an unprecedented feat that transformed the perception of automobiles from mere novelties to practical vehicles. With her two sons by her side, Bertha embarked on a daring 66-mile journey from Mannheim to Pforzheim, demonstrating the viability of the Benz Patent-Motorwagen and igniting public interest in the automobile.
