A native of rural Iowa, Adam attended Grinnell College, double-majored in Economics and Mandarin Chinese, and participated in varsity track and cross-country. A graduate of the University of Utah’s Master of City and Metropolitan Planning Program, he specialized in ecological planning and interdisciplinary sustainability. He currently serves as the International Dark Sky Places Program Manager at the International Dark-Sky Association and lives deep in the Sonoran Desert in Tucson, AZ. When not at work, Adam is an avid runner, outdoorsman, disillusioned Minnesota professional sports fan, craft beer aficionado, and the lead singer/guitarist of a punk rock band, Bikini Shark. In 2020, he was one of the first three openly-queer athletes (along with Matt Llano and Megan Youngren) to compete in the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials.
