Episode 29 – 2020–21: Empty Stadiums & Broken Momentum

Listen Later

n Episode 29 of You’ll Never Pod Alone, we revisit one of the most challenging and surreal seasons in Liverpool’s modern history — the defence of the Premier League title played against the backdrop of a global pandemic.
The 2020–21 campaign began with Liverpool aiming to build on their long-awaited championship triumph, but the season quickly unravelled following the devastating injury to Virgil van Dijk, triggering an unprecedented defensive crisis. With key players sidelined throughout the year, Jürgen Klopp was forced to constantly reshape his side, deploying midfielders in defence and relying on inexperienced youngsters to keep the season alive.
Behind closed doors, Anfield lost its intimidating atmosphere, and an unthinkable run of home defeats threatened Liverpool’s Champions League hopes. Despite continued brilliance from Mohamed Salah, inconsistency and fatigue turned a title defence into a battle for survival in the top four.
Yet resilience defined the run-in. Emerging heroes like Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams stepped up, culminating in one of the most emotional moments in Premier League history — Alisson Becker’s last-minute header against West Bromwich Albion, keeping Liverpool’s season alive.
Liverpool ultimately finished 3rd, securing Champions League football against the odds and proving the mentality built under Klopp remained intact.
Episode 29 tells the story of adversity, endurance, and belief — a season without silverware, but one that demonstrated the character of champions.
Because sometimes survival is victory.
