How do you know the difference between someone who is just being negative toward you, versus when they are offering a helpful criticism or advice that could better your life? What should you do if they are just negative?

When a person expresses something that is hard for us to hear, often our knee-jerk reaction can be to get defensive. But we also might have the habit of assuming that if someone communicates something that contradicts us or is reproving of us, they're probably right and we must be doing something wrong. Or we might even be caught in a quandary of not knowing whether we are in the former situation or the latter.
