Welcome to episode 3 of The Metta Mystic!
In part 1 of this episode we will be discussing how do we come to know what we know? My thinking has been profoundly changed since this information came into my life. Like many of you I have asked the question of what is reality? How do we know what we know? How do we determine what is good and is bad?
Why do we think we must live in binaries and polarities? There are troves of philosophical ideas, scientific dissertations, religious assertions, the whole of human experience may be to answer how do we know what we know? For sake of time and interest, I will be touching upon just a few of these ideas. These brief exploits in epistemology, are not exhaustive, but have been long thought over by many more minds than mine own. So this is just a preliminary conversation diving into determining what knowledge is and where it comes from.
Knowledge can be defined as facts, information, and skills acquired by a person through experience or education; the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject. A second definition states that knowledge
can also be acquired as awareness or familiarity gained by experience of a fact or situation.
But there’s far much more to knowledge than good ole’ Miriam or Oxford can succinctly and objectively define. Knowledge be used as a tool, an institution, a penalization, a civilization starter or societal breaker, a way to make things better for sick children, creating innovations for the handicapable, and prolonging human lives.
While we sojourn through these brief exploits in epistemology it would be remiss if we did not also briefly discuss the many ideas and definitions of consciousness. And without some version of sentience there would be no search for knowledge and none of us would be here in this present form wondering how much longer is this guy going to keep talking until we get to aliens and mystical experiences? I promise those topics are going to get plenty of attention and I can’t wait to talk about them, but again we have to lay the foundation and ground ourselves before we can move to the quantum realms where there is no ending or beginning and is as Michelle Yao experienced: Everything. Everywhere. All at Once.
