Episode 3- Climate Activists in Northern Ireland

Listen Later

A few months ago I attended a talk about Climate Change with Secretary General of Amnesty International, Kumi Naidoo. The one question which almost always arises around this topic is, “What can we do about it?" Normally, the answer sounds something like, "fly less, eat little meat, invest in reusables or plant more trees." Acknowledging how these actions are important, Kumi's advice was rather different. He described how climate strikes, held by young people across the globe, have had more impact upon the political sphere than any other environmental initiative.

Today, Northern Ireland has a busy calendar of climate protests organised by, Northern Ireland Student Climate Network. A recent protest held in Belfast on 20th September saw Belfast City Council declare a climate emergency. Regular strikes are held across the country and also receive support from local community groups and individuals. This week on the podcast, I chatted to Anna from Youth Strike 4 Climate Belfast/ Fridays for Future Belfast. Emma from Youth Strike 4 Climate Derry and Melanie from Múscail, a network mobilising action on the climate crisis. I wanted to hear why they got involved, their thoughts on Climate Change and why others should join them to act in favour of climate justice.
