Letting team members go is one of the most difficult parts of being a business owner. Emotionally, it can drain the life out of an office and leave you with the responsibility of delegating work.

5 Steps to Letting Someone Go Smoothly

  1. Confirm
    1. Don’t immediately go with your gut
    2. Ask yourself, “Is this person NOT doing their job and can I prove it”?
    3. List out the characteristics of the role with the ideal person
    4. Compare your employee to (c)
    5. Opportunity
      1. Sit down with person and talk about the characteristics—explain the gap
      2. Dismissal
        1. Get HR Involved – legal issues can get tricky
          1. Outsource if you don’t have HR on staff
          2. Utilize an attorney if the above steps aren’t possible
          3. Get IT involved
          4. Distribute responsibilities
          5. Have plan to communicate with team and clients
          6. The Moment
            1. Face-to-face
            2. Keep meeting short (10 minutes)
            3. Have plan to escort this person out
            4. Communication
              1. Don’t do email- talk with team as a whole
              2. DON’T BE SILENT
