I'm sharing my personal story on how I found my biological dad using Ancestry DNA in today's episode. The theme of this episode is about identity and family.
A little about my background is that I grew up with a white father and a Filipino mother, who raised a biracial child who was mixed Black and Filipino. I talk about this in episode one on my YouTube channel and in my book if you want more backstory.
My biological father was not aware of my existence, so potentially going down this journey could have either a positive or negative outcome. In this video, I break down the "Why?", "Steps I took" and the "Outcome" of the situation to finding my biological father.
A person’s identity is made up of their own character combined with their family and social roots. Identity, like culture, is ever changing. Further, being a person of a particular race or class also influences one's identity. When people speak of 'intersectionality,' they are broadly referring to this way that a single person can be at the intersection of multiple different social identities. The experiences of a White, heterosexual, urban, and middle-class mother, for instance, will be vastly different to that of a Black, homosexual, rural, and working class single woman. Identity, in short, is made up of a multitude of factors and an individual is both subject to their circumstance and an agent able to influence which parts of themselves they present to the world.
