Emergent Divergents

Episode 3: Parenting Solo as a Divergent Dad

Listen Later

This week’s episode was recorded back in June but given that it was Father’s Day here in Australia, it seems more relevant now.
We began this conversation with the intent on exploring the topic of masculinity in our pathologically ill, modern world; of how masculinity has evolved over the generations and what masculinity even means or looks like nowadays. Masculinity is a broad topic in dire need of reflection and re-examination and it wouldn't be unreasonable to assert that many men are struggling to find their place in today's society. Our role models of old are, rightly or wrongly, being removed from their pedestals leaving us to languish as we search for a meaningful path. As a result, far too many men are in crisis.
But try as we might to stick to stay on topic, with us both being gifted with ADHD we will typically go where the wind will take us. And today was one of those days. Our exploration of masculinity leads us to speaking on parenting, and in particular, Fatherhood.
This episode is quite a special one as Cormac shares his personal experience of raising twins as a single father with the additional challenges that came as a result of his gender. From adverse attitudes grounded simply in ignorance to outright discrimination, whether that came from the public, work or government departments, he has had to face many unique hurdles, which he openly shares with us. So open that we even had to bleep out names here and there.
Life can be tough, and I hope that this episode inspires anyone who might feel the need, to reach out.
