On this 30th episode and the last of our first season, we speak with local Ithaca-based artist Maryam Adib (@smarf.art and @thrifted_underwear on Instagram). Maryam is an activist, painter, muralist, and all-around maker working across mediums and exploring the complexity of the black experience. Her work includes political cartoon-style t-shirts she has sold to fundraise for local organizations, installation pieces made of hand-sewn quilts and mirrors, and beautifully complex series of paintings full of symbolism and black bodies, among other work. We were struck by the extensive research motivating the decisions she makes in her art, and her personal story in navigating the modern "art world" and its complexities as a woman of color creating personally meaningful work. Join us to listen to her story and check out her work online!
