The world around us never settles down and while we understand it to be commonplace, our bodies can sense the rising stress. This impacts our breathing and is known to increase respiratory rate. This increase with rate can also increase the upper chest breathing, making us (and our patients!) be less efficient breathers. So what can we as physical therapists do? Teach our patients how to adequately diaphragmatic breath.
In this episode, Dr. Burriesci breaks down the do’s and don’ts of diaphragmatic breathing with patients. She teaches applicable ways to set our patients up for success, long-term, when it comes to properly engaging the diaphragm. She tweaks the usual cues and explains that our words do matter. These simple changes to our language and understanding the “why” behind the various breathing sequences will impact our patients in a multitude of different ways.
