Being adaptable is a skill set I needed to learn to level up in many aspects of my life.
When I was a young professional, any changes to my “plan” would enrage me and often derail me from the goal I was trying to achieve. This was 100% on me. Through time I learned how to be adaptable to change (even though it’s still frustrating).
A few things contributed to this:
- Understanding that my ego was getting in the way. I focused more on how this affected MY plan over what it meant for the team.
- Realizing that whatever change was happening was never as big a deal as I thought. I learned to take a moment to reflect on the change rather than just to be mad
- Understanding that the ability to pivot just takes practice and patience. Its something I still work on today.
- Having kids. Parents you will understand.
Being adaptable can take place in a moment or over several months. No matter the case, give yourself permission to be patient and to give yourself and your team grace. Teams that do this tend to find a way through the adversity.
I believe in you, you should too.
