Secret #5: Funnel Hacking

I’ll never forget the day when I was tuning in to the Pivot podcast, and I heard Scott Galloway, who was one co-hosting the podcast with Kara Swisher, said “The second mouse gets the cheese”. I don’t remember the exact content, but the context can be very much summarised in the quote “The early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.” Scott Galloway and Kara Swisher were discussing business news, the ups and downs, and this insight that being the market leader isn’t always advantageous. This is a huge insight and huge confirmation for me. It pretty much sums up the conclusions drawn based on my current experiences.

At that point in time, I was building my 7-figure online business, but things weren’t always so smooth sailing. My first 3 months of my e-commerce journey involved burning through all of my savings, and I was still breaking even, not making any profit. Then, I signed up for Alex Fedotoff’s course, who is one of my mentors now, and in his first 2 lessons, taught me this same concept: look for existing stores that were already selling what you’re trying to sell and model after them.

In contrast to that, I spent about 4 weeks designing a beauty brush store, sinking thousands of dollars into ads and video editing, with nothing to show for it. I was working really hard - why wasn’t I successful? Simple. Because I wasn’t modelling off the proven winners and leaders in the industry. Contrast that with how I built Bald Shaver, which is modelling off the biggest dog on the block, the difference in workflow was day and night.

Note that I said “modelling”. It’s not the same as copying. Copying can get you in legal trouble and potentially cost you your business, but modelling is fine. People do it all the time. If you’re trying to model after your competitor, here’s what you do:

  • If there’s a headline here, put a headline too
  • If there’s a photo of a person holding the product, take a photo of a person holding your product
  • If there’s a button here, place a button here too, and so on.
  • For people using ClickFunnels, Russell calls this process Funnel Hacking, and calls these people Funnel Hackers.

So, my question for you today is, who can you model after? Who are the biggest dogs on your block, and what aspects of their product/service can you model after?
