Ruby struggles under the weight of fear, guilt, and growing tension in the household. While she distracts herself with sewing and small comforts, Edie’s innocence and Frank’s fragility only sharpen her sense that danger is closing in. Douglas, shaken by what he’s learned and by memories of the war, grows distant. As Ruby battles to keep order—and keep Edie safe—domestic strains spill into moments of anger, confusion, and unexpected tenderness. The threat of Lou Watkins still looms, and Ruby knows that sooner or later they’ll have to decide how far they’re willing to go to protect each other.
