Episode #31: Gerard Canonico

Listen Later

Did you know him freshman year? Sofia chats with the SENSATIONAL Gerard Canonico (Be More Chill at the Two River Theatre, Spring Awakening, American Idiot, Bare, Groundhog Day, Be More Chill Off-Broadway)!!! Gerard is best known for originating the role of misfit bully Rich Goranski in Be More Chill at the Two River Theatre, which he just reprised in its current Off-Broadway run at the Pershing Square Signature Center and will continue to play on Broadway at the Lyceum Theatre. Gerard made his Broadway debut at the age of ten as Gavroche in Les Misérables, going on to star as Tom Canty the Pauper in The Prince and the Pauper Off-Broadway, Louis in The King and I at Paper Mill Playhouse, Children’s Letters to God and the national tour of Casper the Musical. He has also been featured as an understudy and Moritz Stiefel in Spring Awakening, Matt Lloyd in Bare, Roger Davis in Cas Di Cultura’s production of RENT, American Idiot, Brooklynite, 21 Chump Street, Stand Tall, and recently played Fred Kleiser in Groundhog Day. Sofia and Gerard discuss his initial approach to and portrayal of Rich Goranski, the complexity of Rich’s character and backstory, how that note on “IT’S FROM JAPAN!” was created, the true identity of Rich’s SQUIP, his experience making his Broadway debut as Gavroche in Les Miserábles, his favorite Halloween costumes and more! Gerard is one of the coolest, sweetest humans, and he gives incredible insight into his experience as an actor and the wonderful weirdness of Be More Chill. Go see Gerard in Be More Chill once it hits Broadway this coming February at the Lyceum Theatre!
