Episode #31 – Lynn Reierson “West Pennant Forge - A 30 Year Dream Come True”

Lynn Reierson is a hobby blacksmith in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.  Her forge, West Pennant Forge, is the culmination of a 30-year dream that just started in 2011.  Her interest is in functional art pieces made out of steel, stainless steel and copper.

 

What We Talked About

 

  • Lynn was looking for an artistic outlet in her life, so she asked a local blacksmith if she could work for him for three weeks to learn a few things.  After those three weeks, she built her work shop and forge in 2011.

    •  

    • She has equipped her shop mainly with old tools, such as an antique hand-crank drill press, an old roller from a nearby shipyard and her father’s 175 lb Peter Wright anvil.  Her forge is made from an old riveting forge she acquired from her cousin.

      •  

      • As far as learning the basic blacksmithing techniques, Lynn is self-taught.  But, she has taken art courses at the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design to incorporate brass and copper into her pieces.

        •  

        • Lynn is a member of the Cape Breton Blacksmith Association, the Maritime Blacksmith Association, and ABANA.
        • CanIronX is coming up in July this summer and Lynn is volunteering to help organize the event, she mentions the kids program that will be available and directed by Lorelei Simms.

          •  

          • Lynn is happy to talk to anyone who is interested in attending CanIronX and can help them with a list of Nova Scotia points of interest and itineraries.
