Infinite Threads: Conversations on Love, Connection, and Compassion

Episode 310 — Look for the Helpers

Listen Later

Welcome to Infinite Threads. I’m your host, Bob.

There’s something that happens to us when the world feels uncertain.

You can almost feel it in your chest before you can name it.

A tightening.A sense that something isn’t quite steady.Like the ground hasn’t moved… but it doesn’t feel as solid as it did before.

And when that feeling sets in, we start looking outward.

Trying to make sense of things.Trying to understand what’s happening.Trying to find something we can hold on to.

I remember hearing, a long time ago, a simple piece of advice.

It wasn’t loud.It wasn’t complicated.

Just something said gently, almost in passing.

Look for the helpers.

At the time, it sounded comforting.

But I don’t think I fully understood it until much later.

Because when things feel heavy, our attention naturally goes to what’s wrong.

That’s where the urgency is.That’s where the noise is.That’s what pulls at us.

And before long, it can start to feel like that’s all there is.

But if you stay there too long… something inside you begins to shift.

You start to feel disconnected.Guarded.A little less open than you were before.

And that’s where that quiet advice begins to matter.

Not because it changes what’s happening…

but because it changes what you’re able to see within it.

Because even in difficult moments—especially in difficult moments—there are always people who step forward.

Not for attention.

Not for recognition.

Just because something in them says, this is where I’m needed.

You might not notice them at first.

They don’t always stand in the center of things.

Sometimes they’re just off to the side.

A person helping someone else gather themselves.A voice choosing calm when things start to escalate.Someone offering presence instead of judgment.

Small things, maybe.

But not really.

Because when you begin to notice them… something inside you begins to settle.

The world doesn’t feel quite as sharp.

Not because everything is okay…

but because you’re seeing more of the picture.

You’re seeing that even in moments that feel fractured, there are still threads holding things together.

Still people choosing care.

Still moments of quiet steadiness.

And that does something important.

It reminds you that humanity hasn’t disappeared.

It reminds you that kindness is still active.

It reminds you that not everything is moving in the same direction.

And over time, that changes the way you move too.

You become a little less reactive.

A little more grounded.

A little more willing to stay open, even when it would be easier to close off.

Because you’ve seen something that steadies you.

Something real.

And then, almost without noticing…

you begin to shift from observing to participating.

Because once you’ve seen the helpers… it’s hard not to recognize the moments where you could be one.

Not in a big, dramatic way.

Just in the same quiet way you first noticed.

The way someone once showed up for you.

The way someone steadied a moment without making a scene.

The way someone chose care when it would have been easier not to.

And that’s how it spreads.

Not through grand gestures.

But through presence.

Through awareness.

Through small, steady choices that ripple outward in ways we don’t always see.

So if things feel uncertain right now…

if the world feels heavier than usual…

if it’s hard to know where to place your attention…

start there.

Look for the helpers.

Not to escape what’s happening…

but to remind yourself of what’s still true within it.

That there are still people who care.

Still people who show up.

Still people who choose something better, even in difficult moments.

And maybe, as you begin to see them more clearly…

you’ll find something else too.

A quiet place inside yourself that knows…

you can be one of them.
