Infinite Threads: Conversations on Love, Connection, and Compassion

Episode 328: When the Noise Gets Loud

Listen Later

Welcome back to Infinite Threads. I’m your host, Bob.

I’ve been away for a little while.

A week in Tennessee… surrounded by mountains, quiet roads, and the kind of stillness you don’t realize you’ve been missing until you finally feel it again. And along with that, I stepped away from social media too. No constant updates. No endless scrolling. Just… space.

And I’ll tell you something honestly.

I didn’t realize how loud everything had gotten until it all went quiet.

Not just out there… but in here.

Because when you’re in it every day—when the noise is constant—you stop noticing it. It just becomes the background of your life. The opinions, the arguments, the urgency of everything feeling like it matters right now.

And then you step away…

And suddenly, you can hear yourself think again.

There’s a clarity that comes back. A steadiness.

Not because the world changed while you were gone… but because you finally had a moment to step outside of it.

And coming back into it now… refreshed, grounded… I’m seeing it a little differently.

The noise is still here.

The same voices. The same tension. The same pull to react, to respond, to jump into the current of everything happening all at once.

But something inside me isn’t rushing to meet it the way it was before.

And that’s what I want to talk about today.

Because the world we’re living in right now… it’s not quiet.

It’s loud in a way that pulls at us constantly.

Every headline feels urgent. Every opinion feels like it demands a response. Every moment feels like you’re supposed to pick a side, say something, do something, be something immediately.

And over time… that does something to us.

It tightens us.

It speeds us up.

It shortens the distance between what we feel and what we do about it.

And before we even realize it… we’re not really choosing our responses anymore.

We’re reacting.

Automatically. Repeatedly. Constantly.

And here’s the part that’s easy to miss.

When everything is loud… we start to believe that the only way to be heard is to be just as loud.

So we raise our voices.

We sharpen our words.

We push harder.

Not always because we want to… but because it feels like the only way to exist inside all of it.

But stepping away… even for a short time… reminds you of something important.

You don’t have to match the noise.

You don’t have to become it.

There’s something underneath all of that… something quieter, but stronger.

And it doesn’t shout.

It doesn’t rush.

It doesn’t need to prove itself in every moment.

It just is.

And when you reconnect with that part of yourself… even briefly… you start to notice how much of your energy was being pulled outward.

How much of your attention was being claimed by things that didn’t actually need your immediate response.

How often you were being invited into something… that didn’t necessarily deserve your presence.

And that realization doesn’t make you disengaged.

It makes you intentional.

Because there’s a difference between being aware of the world… and being consumed by it.

One keeps you connected.

The other pulls you away from yourself.

And right now… a lot of people are feeling that pull.

You can see it. You can feel it in conversations, in posts, in the way people respond to each other.

There’s a tension sitting just beneath the surface.

A readiness to react.

A sense that everything is right on the edge.

And when you’re inside that long enough… it starts to feel normal.

But it’s not.

It’s just familiar.

And sometimes the most important thing you can do… is step back long enough to remember what normal actually feels like.

Not numbness.

Not disengagement.

But steadiness.

Clarity.

Choice.

That moment where something happens… and instead of being pulled immediately into it… you feel the space to decide how you want to show up.

That space matters.

More than we realize.

Because inside that space… is where everything begins to change.

Not the world all at once.

But you.

And when you change the way you meet the noise…

The noise starts to lose its hold on you.

It doesn’t disappear.

But it doesn’t control you either.

You start to hear it differently.

You start to move through it differently.

And maybe… just maybe…

You become a little bit of that quiet in the middle of it.

Not silent.

Not passive.

But grounded.

Present.

Clear.

And from that place…

You don’t have to add to the noise to matter.

You don’t have to match it to be heard.

You don’t have to become it to belong.

You can choose something else.

And that choice…

is where everything begins to shift.
