I Believe In You

Episode 34: Controlling Risk

Listen Later

You have to take risks if you want to succeed.

The secret is that these should be calculated risks, and they are something you can practice and prepare for.

Taking a risk is the equivalent of jumping off a cliff. No matter what kind of risk it is, it’s gonna be scary and there is ALWAYS a chance you might not make it. WITH THAT SAID, the key to taking risks effectively is to “prepare for the jump”.

When younger, I would often leap without looking. While I made some big strides doing that, I also had some big falls. But with that experience I also started to learn what to look for. Metaphorically - studying the cliff or the jump in every direction, thinking about potential outcomes, perhaps most importantly looking at where I might land. All of these play into whether or not I’m going to take the risk.

At the end of the day, the only way to get good at taking calculated risks, is to take them and learn. One must also keep in mind that what may be a small risk to one person, may be a gigantic one to another. It’s not on anyone to judge someone’s distance, but to support them in pursuing their right to have a goal.

I believe in you, you should too.
