Ancient World

Episode 34 - The Examination of Dante Begins. And why substance comes before logic, in Faith. Canto XXIV

Listen Later

In this episode Dante is being questioned by St. Peter about the first and foundational virtue of Faith - what it is, if Dante has it, and where he finds the proof.

This is the first of three examinations on the theological virtues Faith, Hope and Love/Charity - by the Apostles in the Fixed Stars.

This canto is full of very deep and profound philosophical and theological questions, but still with a firm footing in a secular understanding of the spiritual and Divine. Dante is also showing the essence of scholasticism in several tercets (themselves tree parts in one unit), combining Greek Philosophy and The Biblical Stories.

In this 8th sphere the souls are described as comets, symbolizing the high levels of blessedness and insight/knowledge.

Thanks for listening,

and enjoy!
