Today we are sharing the story of Alexander Pearce, an Irish-born man who in the early 1800s was sentenced to serve seven years in a penal colony in what is now Tasmania for stealing six pairs of shoes.
He escaped with a few other prisoners into the treacherous lands off of Sarah Island. He was the only one that would survive. When he was caught, he told a story of betrayal and cannibalism that was so shocking they thought he was making it up.
