Episode 351: Blessings and Commandments

Listen Later

Motherhood is spoken of throughout Scripture as a high and important calling. Honoring mothers is so important that it is enshrined as one of the ten guidelines for abundant living. Throughout Scripture, God often granted motherhood to women who were barren or otherwise unable to conceive. The Bible never states that every woman should be a mother. However, it does say that those whom the Lord blesses to be mothers should take the responsibility seriously.

Children are a gift from God because they are an investment. This isn't because parents should expect something in return from their kids, but because as one participates in raising children, it produces something of worth. However, while the Bible makes it clear that motherhood is a blessing, several things are expected of God-fearing mothers. We explore six of these.

We end by discussing the idea of being a “mother in Israel” – a title given to the prophetess, Deborah, who did not have children of her own.
