Bill Long has had a most interesting career in Agriculture. His wife, Jeanette, sent me Bill's list of achievements, and I could not believe how long it was.
Bill started as an Agronomist after growing up on a Farm in the Mid North of SA. His inquisitive mind meant that he chose agronomy over being a Farmer, which he stepped back into later in life.
When he started in Agronomy, it marked the beginning of the evolution of precision Farming, and Farmers needed help converting from the old, conventional way of Cropping. Bill really enjoyed that transition period.
After a dozen or so years as an Agronomist, his clients kept asking him that they wanted more. So Bill and Jeanette started Ag Consulting Co. to give their clients a wider range of services they yearned for.
Bill and Jeanatte returned to Farming after buying a place near Ardrossan on the Yorke Peninsula (YP). He soon found that expansion in the YP was going to be difficult, and through his client work in the Eyre Peninsula (EP), he saw the underutilization of the country there. They cashed their chips and reinvested in a couple of Farms on the EP at less than half the price. Their son Will is now involved, and between them, they now Crop over 3000 hectares.
We broke this story up into a two-part podcast, with part 1 focusing on Bill's career and his achievements. In part 2, we cover Cropping RD & E and the role of the GRDC in that. Something Bill is pretty passionate about. I really enjoyed my chat with Bill, who knows his stuff, and I'm positive you will take so much away from the many subjects we covered.
I hope you enjoy. End of message.
