Episode #36 – Rebecca Knott “She Held Her First Hammer at 3 Years Old ”

Listen Later

Rebecca Knott is an artist blacksmith from Guilford, England.  She has been around blacksmithing her whole life, she held her first hammer at the ripe age of three.  She studied fine art at Southhampton Solent University, then worked with a master blacksmith for 7 months before returning home to work in her father’s (Terrence Clark) shop.  Working on several large projects with her father gave her the experience and knowledge to start a blacksmithing business of her own in 2007.  Her gates, sconces and other custom pieces show an exceptional quality of workmanship and attention to detail.

What We Talked About

  • Rebecca spent fair amount of time in her father’s blacksmith shop when she was young, making pieces of art for presents.
  • Starting University in the photography field, Rebecca soon wanted a deeper art education and moved into the Fine Arts program.  She ended up leaving university because she felt she didn’t want to become an artist, that it wasn’t the route for her.
  • The following seven months after university were spent learning from master blacksmith, Brian Russel.  This was her first real blacksmithing job.  They were working on architectural gates and railings where every connection was a fire weld.  One of the first jobs Brian gave to Rebecca was to hand forge 600 nails for a stone mason who was building a house.
  • Rebecca headed back to her father’s business with the knowledge she had gained and worked on large commission projects with him, such as a large set of gates for Oxford University.
  • She has been in business for herself since 2007, though she wished she had worked with more smiths before branching off on her own.
  • Her business is growing mainly through word of mouth enhanced by marketing through social media.
  • Her artwork is currently in the Fire and Iron gallery in England.
