Ben called out then checked himself. Of course, nobody could hear him from the house if he shouted over the gate.  He continued pressing on the bell until a weak light came on and cast a feeble light across the front porch.  The main door opened and a young woman came out walking slowly towards the gate. 

He called out cheerily peering through the grill as he waited for her to approach him.  She opened the gate and took the food from him without as much as a thank you.  Ben sneaked a look at her unsmiling face and bit his tongue.
