Episode 36: The Objectivity Lie: How Standardised Testing Segregates Students and Fails Our Schools

Listen Later

Today’s episode argues that standardised testing, specifically the SBAC, is not an objective measure of student knowledge and ability. Instead, it perpetuates segregation and inequality by favoring students who fit into the standards of the neuro-majority whilst neglecting students with disabilities and those from marginalised communities. Dr. Hoerricks uses Critical Theory and the Power Threat Meaning Framework to explain how standardised testing creates a sense of threat and failure for students, especially those with IEPs, and reinforces societal power structures that disadvantage them. They call for a more just education system that recognises the diversity of learners and values their individual growth and progress, not just standardised test scores.
