Listen Later

This Week: When is Three Days One Day?

Answer: When the event is so full and real that it takes time-bound creatures three days to experience 36 hours.
YOUR HOSTS: Liturgically Litigious Don Gonzalez, Mark “Why Can’t We Just Agree I’m Right?” Connolly, and Kevin “That’s The Last Time I Prep For A Gosh Darn Podcast!” Gonzalez

(CARROLLTON, TX – Cradle of Civilization) Almost live from the Broadcast Studios of the Theological Armory. This evening we had a lively discussion about the Triduum, coupled with some never before reviewed by us cigars and a new (for us) blended Scotch, the Infamous Goose. (AKA Famous Grouse)
What is the Triduum? Well, it is the shortest season in the Catholic Liturgical Calendar. Some say it is three days. Some say it is one event. Some (popes and bishops and God) say it is ONE day.
Or, do they? Don poses the question: “What does the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops know anyway? Do they actually have any authority?” Now, I (Mark) actually put those words into his mouth, so I will answer on Don’s behalf.

“They don’t know beans about how to count days.” – Fake Don Gonzalez

OK, lest I cause scandal – behold:
Canon 447 states, “A conference of bishops, a permanent institution, is a group of bishops of some nation or certain territory who jointly exercise certain pastoral functions for the Christian faithful of their territory in order to promote the greater good which the Church offers humanity, especially through forms and programs of the apostolate fittingly adapted to the circumstances of time and place, according to the norm of law.”
Note, they (episcopal conferences) are not the Magisterium, as was pointed out by Cardinal Gerhard Mueller, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.
“Episcopal conferences have authority on certain matters, but they are not a magisterium beside the Magisterium, without the Pope and without communion with all the bishops.” – Cardinal Gerhard Mueller, from an interview published in The Famille Chretienne in May of 2016.
Thus Don is correct in stating that he does not have to accept as a matter of faith that the Triduum is one day. As he meticulously pointed out, it has three days. And as sometimes happens, we were talking across each other and saying the same things. Tomato Tomahto.
The Triduum is a beautifully solemn event saturated with meaning and abundant graces for those who willingly participate. We invite you to partake of this shortest of seasons as you prepare for Easter Sunday. You will be glad you did.
