In this episode, Dr. Burriesci breaks down her recently released Contraindication study guide for students prepping for the NPTE. In an attempt to make a clear-cut, hard stop, red light, contraindication guide, but she was quickly reminded that there is much more yellow/caution/“it depends” than hard stops. Unfortunately, “It depends” is not an answer you can pick on the NPTE.
This podcast is an attempt to read between the lines, give rationale and thought process behind the clinical decisions you may be faced with day to day in your setting while giving guidance to the student sitting for the NPTE trying to navigate safety questions or the new grad getting their footing in a complex environment.
She attempts to pull out the hard stops (red light), but explains the rationale behind most of the yellow lights and when to proceed with caution as clinical judgments will play a pivotal role in most of the decisions you are faced with.
In this episode:
- Contraindications to exercise (Red light)
- Precautions to exercise (Yellow light)
- Guidelines on BP, HR, spO2, lab values, VTE
- Role of clinical decision-making and making decisions based on your patient
- Student vs. Clinician
- Acute Care Section CPG: Lab Values & Vital Signs
- Cardiopulmonary Section: VTE CPG & Oxygen Supplementation
